Kerincisungaipenuh.com, SINGAPURA — Nama Halimah Yacob akan tercatat sebagai Presiden ke-8 Singapura sekaligus menjadi kepala negara perempuan pertama negara itu. Perempuan berjilbab tersebut akan dilantik pada Kamis (14/9/2017) besok.
Halimah otomatis terpilih setelah dua kandidat lainnya tidak memperoleh sertifikat kelayakan untuk pemilihan presiden tahun ini yang diperuntukkan untuk komunitas Melayu. Dua kandidat lainnya, yaitu Mohamed Salleh Marican dan Farid Khan, tidak memenuhi syarat kepemilikan saham minimal S$500 juta.
Dikutip Kerincisungaipenuh.com dari Channelnewsasia.com, perempuan 63 tahun tersebut mencatat sejarah sebagai perempuan pertama dan orang Melayu pertama yang terpilih sebagai kepala negara sejak lebih dari 47 tahun lalu. Sebelumnya, Halimah juga mencetak sejarah setelah menjadi perempuan pertama yang menjadi Speaker of Parliament pada 2013.
Lahir sebagai anak bungsu dari lima bersaudara, Halimah sudah kehilangan ayahnya pada usia 8 tahun. Ibunya kemudian menjadi tulang punggung keluarga dengan bekerja di kedai makanan dari sebelum fajar hingga larut malam.
“Sejak umur 10 tahun, saya menghabiskan waktu di luar jam sekolah untuk membantu ibu saya, bersih-bersih, mencuci pakaian, membereskan meja, dan melayani pelanggan, dan saya orang yang lebih baik untuk pekerjaan itu,” tulis Halimah tentang dirinya di situs pribadinya.
Dengan masa kecil seperti itu, Halimah mengaku telah mengalami kemiskinan secara langsung dan tahu bagaimana buruknya kondisi itu. “Hal itu memaksa Anda untuk survive, mengambil makanan di meja, dan bergulit dengan ketidakpastian masa depan setiap hari. Hal itu membatasi pelihanmu tapi sekaligus menempa semangatmu untuk sukses.”
Pada saat SMP, dia sempat nyaris dikeluarkan dari Singapore Chinese Girls’ School karena terlalu sering meninggalkan kelas. Momen itu diakuinya sebagai yang terburuk dalam hidupnya.
Tak patah semangat, dia melanjutkan pendidikan di Tanjong Katong Girls’ School. Selanjutnya, dia lulus dari Fakultas Hukum University of Singapore dan mendapatkan gelar Master Hukum di National University of Singapore.
Karier
Kariernya dimulai pada 1978 bersama the National Trades Union Congress (Kongres Serikat Perdagangan Nasional) di mana dia menjabat di banyak posisi selama tiga dekade, hingga naik menjadi wakil sekretaris jenderal gerakan buruh.
Hal itu menjadi jalan bagi Halimah untuk masuk ke dunia politik atas desakan PM Goh Chok Tong paa 2001. Halimah terpilih sebagai anggota parlemen mewakili Jurong Group Representation Constituency (GRC).
Pada 2011, Halimah ditunjuk sebagai Menteri Negara di Kementerian Pengembangan Masyarakat, Pemuda dan Olahraga. Pada 2013, Halimah ditunjuk sebagai perempuan pertama Ketua Parlemen Singapura. Sebelum menyatakan niatnya bertarung sebagai calon presiden, Halimah menjabat sebagai Juru Bicara Parlemen sekaligus anggota.
Selama ini, Halimah aktif dalam membela hak-hak perempuan, isu-isu kesehatan mental dan aktif dalam berbagai organisasi, di antaranya Club HEAL dan Singapore Muslim Women’s Association (PPIS).
